Golden hour is the most flattering light there is: low, warm and forgiving. This look recreates it on skin, so you glow whether you’re in the sun at four or under candlelight at ten.

1. Prep for glow, not shine

Start with a hydrating serum and let it sink in for a full minute. Press a pea-sized amount of SHEGLAM Complexion Pro Foundation into the centre of the face with fingertips, then blend outwards with a damp sponge. Keep the edges sheer.

2. Warm the eyes

Sweep a matte taupe through the crease with a fluffy brush, then press a bronze shimmer onto the lid with a fingertip for the most reflective finish. Smudge the same bronze along the lower lash line.

“Put shimmer only where light naturally hits: the lid, the high cheekbone and the cupid’s bow.”

3. Finish with a satin lip

Line with a liner one shade deeper than your lips, then press Pillow Talk in Pillow Talk Medium on with a fingertip for a softer, satin finish. Mist with setting spray and you’re done.

Prep like an artist: skin before makeup

Most makeup problems are preparation problems. Here is what to do in the ten minutes before you start.

Makeup sits on skin. If the skin underneath is dry in places and oily in others, the makeup will show you exactly where.

Cleanse, properly

Cleansing is not about stripping the skin. A micellar water lifts the previous day's residue without leaving the surface tight, which is what you want before anything else goes on.

Hydrate, then wait

Moisturiser needs a minute or two to absorb. Foundation applied onto wet moisturiser will pill — those small rolls of product that appear under your fingers. The waiting is the step, not the product.

Prime for your problem

Primer is not one thing. A blurring primer softens texture. A gripping primer extends wear. A hydrating primer stops dry patches from grabbing foundation. Pick for the problem you actually have rather than buying all three.

Set, lightly

Powder only where you get shine, which for most people is the centre of the face. Powder everywhere flattens the skin and ages the look.

A setting spray at the end melts the powder edges together so the face reads as one surface rather than as layers.

What this buys you

Ten minutes of preparation usually saves twenty minutes of touching up. It also means less product: well-prepared skin needs a thinner layer of foundation to look even, which is both cheaper and more natural.
